The Significance of Moms

October 15, 2013 by pcobb0 Leave a Comment

Our society places less and less significance on motherhood, especially on the stay at home mom.  Women are somehow viewed as less significant if they are stay at home moms. However, there was one mom who is overlooked in the Bible, whose daily chores resulted in one of the greatest miracles Jesus performed.  Her story is found in John 6:1-15.  She is the mom of the little boy who offered to share his five loves of bread and two fish with Jesus and the disciples.  This particular miracle is mentioned in all four gospels but the account in John is the only one that mentions the fact that a little boy had five loaves of bread and two fish.

You may be wondering where does a mom come into play here?  She isn’t mentioned in this account.  She’s not, she’s in the background where  moms usually are.

Where did the little boy get the five loaves and two fish?  He got them from the mom who packed his lunch and taught him to be generous.  How many times have you packed a lunch or fixed a meal and thought, “Will this ever end?  I am so tired!  If I have to make another sandwich, I’m going to scream!” Moms do whatever it takes to make sure their kids don’t go hungry and this mom prepared a lunch.  Something as simple as a lunch, but without the lunch, Jesus would not have been able to multiply it to feed the crowd and we would not have the insight that God will multiply what we have and make it enough!

This mom also went through life doing the daily things all moms do.  He had every right to eat his lunch or to snack throughout the day, but he chose to share his lunch with Jesus and the disciples because his mom taught him to share.

This sounds like one amazing lady.  When I get to heaven I want to meet her.  Oh what a glorious time all us moms are going to have talking about our kids!

So when you are tired of doing the mundane, think about the nameless mom who made lunch for her son, taught him not to be selfish,  and ended up feeding over 5,000 hungry people including Jesus himself!
