Healthy Snacks For Kids

When talking about my blog, someone asked if I blog about food.  I haven’t yet and thought, hmm… I do love to cook and thought I’d share some tips to make feeding your kiddos a little bit easier.

Concerning snacks, kids need to eat every two to four hours.  Their tummies are small and they get hungry quicker than us.  And we don’t want our kiddos to become hangry.

One of my kids was an extremely picky eater when younger  and I am happy to report that he has come a long way. He’s still picky, but his palate has matured as he’s aged.

One of the secrets I found  to getting him to eat was to put out healthy snacks every afternoon.  Around 3:00 I would cut up an apple or maybe peel and slice an orange.  He loves baby carrots and raw broccoli, so I’d put them out on the kitchen table with some ranch dressing.  Some days I put out cheese and crackers or slices of turkey. (We called turkey white ham because he only wanted ham).  I simply put out whatever I had in the fridge and cut it up into bite size pieces.   I also had juice boxes (the 100% juice kind) readily available. I did limit each child to one juice box and then they could drink water.  I found that if it was on the table my kids would eat and go and were less likely to start begging for unhealthy snacks. With the exception of cheese and crackers, I didn’t care how much they ate or what they ate because it was all healthy.

Morning snacks were quick, maybe a few crackers or a little fruit.

Some nights the kids wouldn’t eat much supper and that was ok because they filled up on healthy snacks.

So what about you? How do you handle snacks with your kiddos?
